Well good morning everyone, I hope you are having a great day. I just wanted to give you a few tips today on being a strong coach, or for that matter, just being a strong leader.
1. The first thing you want to do when you’re talking to someone is be present. It is probably the most important thing you can do is not have an internal dialogue going on in your head, while you’re talking to that person. Don’t be thinking about what I should ask them next. Don’t be thinking about how do I direct this person to do something; or what I am going to have for dinner tonight. What you really want to focus on is what they are actually saying.
When you really focus on what they are saying you are present in the listening. You’ll show that you really care about that they are saying. This is so important for you to be a strong leader and to show that you care.
2. The second thing you want to do is that you care without judgment. Don’t really focus on what they are doing and show your feelings about that. Just come across as “that’s very interesting”. Show you are really listening. That you are not being judgmental at all.
3. The third and most important thing is to look for the strengths in what they said. A lot of people focus on the weaknesses. I can help you there or I can do this. As a leader, as a coach, we’re always focused on the weaknesses. If you can flip that around and focus on their strengths. What they actually said to you and the strengths of what they said. Just remember an important rule:
“Whatever you focus on, they’re gonna get more of and you’re going to get more of. If you focus on the weaknesses, then you gonna see more weakness. If you focus on the strengths, believe it or not, you will get a stronger person.”
